A common sight at Christmas, the parasitic Mistletoe can commonly be found high up in apple trees, distinguishable by its bright white berries.
Mistletoe berries and leaves contain the toxic protein viscotoxin, which inhibits protein synthesis in cells. Particularly affecting the cells of the cardiovascular system, the effects of consuming mistletoe include upset stomach, blurred vision, hallucinations, miscarriage, and in high doses, death.
It has been suggested that drugs derived from Mistletoe could be used as a cancer treatment, though this is still a topic under research.
