A truly deadly mushroom, to eat a Death Cap is to ingest a ticking time bomb.

Amanita phalloides

One of the most toxic fungi on earth, confusing the Death Cap with an ordinary mushroom may be one of the last things you ever do.

The mushroom contains two groups of toxic ring-shaped peptides: amatoxins and phallotoxins. The amatoxins inhibit RNA polymerase, a vital enzyme for cells to live, and the phallotoxins are highly toxic to cells of the liver.

Reportedly pleasant tasting, as little as a third of a cap can be fatal to a grown man, though death doesn’t come immediately. Initial consumption causes excessive pain, violent vomiting and shortness of breath for a period of three to four days. After this initial period, the unfortunate victim appears to recover, going into a period of remission for up to four days. But the Death Cap is not done. The toxins within destroy the liver from the inside out, and jaundice, delirium, seizures, and coma follow. In many cases, without a liver transplant, death from liver failure is inescapable.
